Only 4 weeks to go until Baby Girl's due date! It is hard to believe that we have already begun the final month of our pregnancy...time flies when you are having fun (and have no idea what craziness lies ahead)! Paul is prepping for fatherhood by testing out a new camera, so Kate's belly continues to be on full display for the photographer. We are so excited to meet our baby, and we have no doubt that she will immediately become the photographer's new muse.

MediClick Throws Baby Girl Shower
Paul was thwarted by his colleagues. Despite his repeated requests for high-proof beverages, power tools, and athletic gear, every last gift was for Baby Girl.
Never accused of being the quickest learner, it is dawning on Paul -- nonetheless -- that this pregnancy is not all about him. There are powerful forces at play here. Over the past several months, the orbit of the Dryden universe has moved its locus to this child in Kate's belly. Her mother and father are spinning around her in tight, concentric ellipses.
Our MediClick friends bestowed Baby Girl with an embarrassment of riches. We're touched by their generosity. Thank you!

These Hardy Southerners
Raleigh was not spared the arctic air parked over the east coast these past few days. As the saner among us cranked up their thermostats, the NC Drydens remain in the throes of a two year display of our profound hardiness.
It began October 2007 with a challenge: how long can we go without turning on the furnace this winter? It ended with Paul away on business, sleeping comfortably in a temperate hotel room, and Kate wiping her condensed breath from the home thermostat registering at 57 degrees.
We made it deep into December, and someone (who shall remain unnamed) noticed a corresponding decrease in monthly gas bills from $160 the same month last year to less than $70. Call it rationalizing if you will, but can it be coincidence that we became the picture of winter health when we breathed less warmed air forced through the ventilation system?
So this year we've held firm at 60 degrees (dropping below only briefly to demonstrate a point). It can seem odd when it feels colder inside than out, but one might be surprised how quickly one feels normal bundled in scarves, fleeces, and wool socks in one's own house.
We gutted it out through this wintry week, watching the outside air drop to 9 degrees. Coming inside from that sort of extreme, believe me that 60 degrees is downright balmy. But please forgive any grammatical errors in this posting as it proves most difficult typing on a keyboard while wearing wool mittens.

Nursery Transformation
We have finally put the finishing touches on Baby Girl's nursery! What an awesome transformation from a walk-through closet to a beautiful bedroom for our little bambina. Paul, the consummate handyman, spent days painting and putting up the shelves, furniture, window valence, etc. Of course, I had to add several feminine touches to the nursery in the form of bows and frills, and Paul is now calling the wall color "pig skin pink!" Poor guy, he has lost his spacious closet but is being a good sport about it (he has been told by experienced parents to start getting accustomed to such treatment).

Parenting 101
We went to the first-time parenting class at Rex Saturday morning, but we've decided there's no real reason to return for part deux. Why? Because Paul was given this helpful instructional pamphlet, an iron-clad list of all the do's and don'ts of being a parent. What more do we need? (Note in particular the appropriate ways to contain a baby, wake her, and how to put her to bed.)

Kate As Soccer Mom
Baby Girl is in heads-down position, and keeps practicing her bicycle kick on Mama's ribs. Kate roles with the bruises and encourages all of Baby Girl's futbol fancies.

Our Little Soccer Stud
Baby Girl has been kicking like crazy! My maternal intuition (I actually have no idea) seems to think that last night and this morning have been her most active to date. Her kicks are becoming so forceful that my ribs are taking quite a bruising, and I am noticing the most powerful kicks when I'm lying down either first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Call me crazy, but I'm actually loving every minute of it! Of course, given my competitive nature, I'm secretly hoping that these foot and elbow jabs will translate into a future soccer career for our little kicker!

33 Weeks & Pinging the Ox
2009 is the year of Baby Girl Dryden. This will make her an Ox, according to the Chinese Zodiac. The Ox is "...unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint."
Christmas was good for Baby Girl Ox. Among her loot was a prenatal heart listening device. "Listen to, talk to, and play music for your unborn baby!" That, according to the package.
Well, either Baby Girl Ox has the faintest heart beat, her parents have the poorest hearing, or we've been caught yet again by the first-time-parents-are-the-biggest-suckers marketing pitch. Despite my best impersonations of sonar guy from Hunt for Red October, I just can't seem to ping our little Ox.
But all is not lost. The kit also came with a microphone which, when speakers are applied to Kate's belly, amplifies sounds of all sorts for Baby Girl's listening pleasure. We've taken full advantage of this to familiarize her to our voices with some light reading each night before bed. To which she responds with wild thrashing and kicking. Kate interprets this as Baby Girl recognizing our voices. Paul thinks she has fewer than seven weeks of privacy left and wishes her parents would let her sleep in peace.
Soon enough, I suspect, she will wreak her revenge for these disturbances.
