Paul & Kate - Five Year Wedding Anniversary

Five years ago today, surrounded by loving family and friends, Paul and Kate were married in the Lingle Chapel at Davidson College. This evening we celebrated with two hours of adult conversation and quiet dinner on the golf course of Clinton County Country Club in Mint Hall, PA.

It occurs to Paul that a person makes hundreds of little decisions throughout any given day, the accumulation of which - after much time - may amount to some consequence, affecting that person's quality of life and happiness. But this single decision about spending your life with one certain person...well, it reminds him that when you get the big ones right, the others have a way of falling into place. He's just very lucky that when he asked, Kate said yes.

Baby Sister at 22 Weeks

We don't even have a clever nickname for Baby Sister, but she has made her presence much more noticeable over the past couple weeks as Kate's belly has finally popped out. The Rex Hospital weekly pregnancy email tells us she weighs about 12 ounces and will add another six within the next week or so. The little sketching they attach shows we have a fully formed - albeit miniature - child inside Kate.

And the kicking has begun. Each night, shortly after dinner as we're relaxing before bedtime, Baby Sister becomes a kicking fiend.

We talk with Clara about being a big sister when the baby girl arrives this December. "No, no, no," she protests. "I'm a big sister right now!"

Clara at Two Years, Five Months

It has been a fun and crazy month with Clara, marked mostly by all our usual summer travel. Our soon-to-be Big Sister (though she insists she is already a big sister...birth is a mere formality) has experienced an explosion of vocabulary, using words we didn't expect from her until junior high at least (and startling in being context appropriate!). She remains Little Miss Manner, finding the composure to ask "may I" and "please" and "thank you" even in the middle of tantrums.

A couple highlights to share...

Prayers at Nighttime

For our nighttime routine, an ever-evolving process, Kate now reads stories to Clara before all three of us retire to the nursery to say prayers. Clara insists that Mama goes into the room first, then she does, then Dada. We all knee at her bedside and individually sing "night night" to whomever or whatever we want. When Mama sings, Clara leans over and whispers to Dada "Shhhh...Daddy. You don't talk, okay?" Every night.

The locks remain on the doors. Clara has become quite accustomed to them, and one might even say they eliminate the tyranny of choice from her evening options...in that she no longer has to make that agonizing decision whether to tough it out in bed or burst through the door every three minutes to prolong her waking time. Call that parental rationalization if you will, but it has also been our psychic balm for these couple months.

But those locks are undone when Paul and Kate go to bed. Clara has been sleeping fine until any point between 1 am and 4 am. At which time she bursts into our bedroom and climbs into bed with us. Paul usually retires to the guest room for a little more sleep, and Kate endures patiently as our three foot daughter proceeds to expand her surface area to take up the entire queen size bed.

Potty Training

We'll say we're about 85% there. But we're expecting some pullback when Baby Sister gets on the scene. That elusive 15% results in some cumbersome packages delivered at the least expected times. Still, we're very impressed with our little girl and her transition to big girl underpants.

We're not sure where she gets this particular trait, but she does at times insist on spending longer on the toilet then one might expect. She just reads, sings, talks to herself, etc. If you happen to walk in on her, she says "No, no Dada. I really need some privacy."

Lock Haven

Our time in Lock Haven coincided with Barb's cousins and their children (and now children's child) being in town, making it a Bowes family reunion. Clara basked in the uninterrupted pleasure of Ga's attention. Our departure instigated a serious two-way bout of withdrawal.

McKnight Family Reunion

Another wonderful McKnight reunion at Camp in Punxie, PA. Besides visiting with her "cousins" (actually, the children of Kate's cousins, but we love Clara's strong sense of kinship), the highlights were riding an amish pony named Beauty, lots of dunks in the pond, a jumping on the quad with Pap-paw. We all learned to disregard the 100 degree temperatures, the hottest spell we've ever known for this mountain camp!

Final Swimming Lesson

Clara matriculated tonight from her second year swim course, mastering the formidable requirements of blowing bubbles and jumping all the way under water while closing her eyes and holding  her breath. Well done little Clara. And all in time for the swimming adventures McKnight Camp will hold next week.

And for next summer, she will be eligible for the "parents can't come in the water"course. That would be the one going on besides us during Clara's classes. Yeah, the one where most of the kids are screaming bloody murder as their parents watch from the sidelines gnawing their fingernails bloody.

It's a GIRL! @ 18 Weeks

Kate and Clara squared off against each other in prognostications for this baby's gender. At the last OB check-up, the heart rate was a quick 150 bpm and the doctor used this indicator to predict baby two would be a boy. This confirmed Kate's intuition, and soon enough we had replaced the pronoun "it" with "he" and "him."

Clara, however, remained steadfast. The new baby will be a girl!  Clara will be a big sister and Clara will have a little sister! (Paul, ever the skeptic, remained agnostic and noncommittal.)

So, Kate is a perfect 0-for-2! (We found out Feta Clara's gender in October 2008. The entry is here.) Let's just say the same for Paul as he was too cowardly to take a stance. But Clara sports an unblemished predictioneer's record!

Clara's interest in these odd little ultrasound photos is another thing altogether. That's not too surprising. She carries around her little doll and boasts of being a big sister. The baby doll is three-dimensional. It has fleshy-colored skin. It has all the characteristics of a baby. These pictures? If that's what her little sister looks like, Clara is now a bit less interested.

The ultrasound today gave us an open window to our little girl live en utero. We watched with wide smiles as she pulled her hand to her mouth again and again. It would seem we have a thumb-sucker in the making. That, along with sneaking sonic glances at her nose, lips, ears, arms, etc. and hearing the heart rate clock back in at 143 bpm, helped make this pregnancy seem a bit less abstract.

At the very least, we now know the right pronouns to use.

4th of July 2011 - In the Hood

We return from Wrightsville Beach to have a proper 4th of July with our neighborhood friends the Quinlans and Brownings.

4th of July 2011 - Wrightsville Beach

We had a most excellent weekend on Wrightsville Beach with our good friends the Miars. Clara and Emma taught each other the kinds of subversions two-year-olds excel in.

Some Wayside Business

On our way to the beach, Clara insists on a wayside stop to take care of business. A sure sign of progress on the potty training front.

Oh, the pictures we post simply because we can...
